Iron People: Life and War along the Railway Tracks in Ukraine

Join us for the opening night of Iron People in Kyiv, a multimedia exhibition presenting the testimony of Ukraine's railway community on Russia's war in Ukraine

Over 200,000 railway workers are responsible for roughly 20,000 kilometers of railway tracks in Ukraine. Despite the constant danger from Russian attacks, they have kept the network largely operational throughout the war. Their work has saved countless lives and has been vital to Ukraine’s ability to withstand the invasion. This exhibition presents their testimony of Putin’s war in Ukraine.

This multimedia exhibition by Jelle Krings brings together years of photography from across Ukraine’s railways; a short documentary film about a train master who runs evacuation trains from the frontlines of the war; stories and testimonies of railway workers and their families living across the country and standing up to Russia’s invasion; and sounds and daily rhythms of life along the rails during the war.

Speakers:

  • Jelle Krings

  • Tetiana Vislohuzova (Master of Evacuation Train 233)

  • War Museum Director General Yurii Savchuk

  • More speakers to be announced
